Most of our time is spent fully outdoors in nature, but when cold or rainy days arrive, our 23x23 bell tent becomes a cozy refuge. This commercial-grade space is the largest and most durable bell tent on the market, creating a magical learning environment with room to spread out for projects and gather for read-alouds.
Cherokee language weaves naturally through our days, from morning greetings to vocabulary connected to our studies. As the only schoolhouse in South Carolina offering Cherokee instruction, we provide a rare opportunity for children to connect with the Indigenous heritage of our land and develop meaningful cultural awareness.
Students learn traditional skills that sustained Appalachian communities for generations: basketry, natural dyeing, food preservation, plant identification, and seasonal living. By working with natural materials and learning regional crafts, students connect to heritage while developing real-world skills, patience, and craftsmanship.
Students raise chickens, tend gardens, preserve harvests, and cook what they grow. Through hands-on homesteading experiences, children learn animal husbandry and sustainable food systems while calculating feed ratios, measuring garden beds, and tracking growth. These practical life skills build confidence and responsibility.
While we have curriculum for a well-rounded academic education, we also focus on meaningful unit studies to enhance learning. Our integrated approach weaves math, language arts, science, history, and hands-on skills together naturally. When we study poultry keeping, students read farm novels, calculate feed ratios, learn heritage breed history, and care for our actual flock. Learning becomes meaningful, connected, and experienced firsthand.
In our intentionally small, multi-age setting, older students develop leadership skills by helping younger ones, while younger children benefit from peer modeling. This family-like atmosphere allows each child to progress at their own pace while building empathy, communication skills, and genuine friendships across age groups.
